Visual Communication - Bachelors

page.two bookstore

This project was born out of my love for reading and a desire to create an original brand, complete with visual assets.

'page.two' is an online bookstore that is targeted towards adults who want to buy books for children or teenagers. To meet the brief, I created a logo name, logo icon, website prototype, bookmark series and promotional video.

Project Statement

An overwhelmingly obvious shift in society today is a reliance on technology, with online shopping as a common practice. The enormous scope of e-commerce can be daunting to customers. But more specifically, I noticed that most of the virtual bookstores have complicated, overwhelming and/or boring homepages. These are not usually visually engaging or interactive, which is where I saw my design problem.

As a regular reader myself, I wanted to combine my love of books with graphic layouts. I also wanted to increase my experience in branding. Some of my inspiration for effective bookstore branding was Book Depository and Reformers Bookshop. When I created my own logo, brand and bookstore, I tried to mimic their use of certain design principles and elements. Therefore, I decided to create an original online bookstore that sends aesthetic, collectible bookmarks when it delivers. Some key design principles include hierarchy, proportion, negative space and contrast.

After doing visual research for various existing online bookstores, I noticed that one of the largest categories was for children ranging between toddlers to young adults (YA). Then, I began to think about what kind of users bought books online, where a large portion of purchases were gifts for other people. Therefore, I decided to narrow down my brief towards a niche target demographic of adults purchasing books for children or YA as gifts.

Deliverables Achieved

The project was focused on creating a design solution for the current problem of online bookstore layouts, which are not very engaging, interactive, or easy to navigate. As I addressed this existing context, I implemented my branding, layout and user experience skills. The website mock-up – complete with original branding – and bookmark design were the main objectives achieved. I also put together a promotional video. A feature that I was excited about printing was the physical bookmark.
