This project worked with the creation of the Material Publishing brand and aimed to create an engaging animated book cover to captivate young audiences and allow them to glimpse into the wonderful worlds of story books through augmented reality book covers.
In the past reading was a major way in which stories were conveyed to the youth. In modern day digital media is what is largely consumed by todays youth, especially short form digital content such as TikToks. Material Publishing is a revolutionary publishing company with the goal of bringing reading back to the fore front of content consumption for the youth by embracing short form content and future technologies. We aim to create engaging animated book covers to engage with young audiences and allow them to glimpse into wonderful worlds through our book covers which they can then further explore through reading exceptional utilising short form content to promote the longer form educational, traditional and healthier median of reading. As a new brand entering the publishing industry, Material Publishing aims to deliver modern, innovational and high quality experiences and products to our clients. With deep consideration of Material Publishings target cliental each element of our brand has been carefully curated to help us in achieving this goal.
Material Publishings first publication “Tip & Chips: Portilea” explores themes of inclusion and acceptance in others differences as our protagonists travel to a different world through a mysterious portal. There they will discover a new people with different traditions, culture and beliefs and learn to embrace differences and become more accepting of others. The book cover was designed with this in mind and was created to be attention grabbing and interesting, aimed at audiences between ages of 10-16. The design is accompanied with a wonderful animation and perfectly displays our vision of the future of the publishing industry.
Kavinu Kankanange is a Brisbane based graphic designer who has recently completed a Bachelor of Design majoring in Visual Communication, with a minor in Interaction Design. In addition to the experience he’s gained throughout his education he also has a collection of freelance graphic design work that he has completed for a number of clients. Kavinu is very passionate about all things design, has a strong work ethic and aspires to learn and grow as a designer in his future endeavours.
