Using digital illustrations that are as educational as they are charming, Beyond the Sea's visual identity aims to strengthen the outreach of an environmental campaign that is directed towards young children, parents and educators.
With a fun, approachable aesthetic that resonates with children and adults, this project tackles designs that consider both effective marketing and ethical educational techniques.

Beyond the sea

This project aims to establish a design guideline for the campaign strategy behind a public educational exhibition, named “Beyond the Sea”. Beyond the Sea is an event hosted by a foundation that advocates for marine conservation, it is created to highlight the foundation’s mission of bringing awareness on endangered sea creatures and the declining state of their habitat. The campaign is targeted towards children’s education, it communicates the foundation’s initiative to young students to direct them to become agents of change in the fight for climate change.

With extensive research on children-centric designs and campaign strategies, the design behind this campaign aims to spark children’s interest on the topic, empower young people in their contributions toward environmental causes, and persuade communities to take interest on a much-needed awareness.

why children?

There have been precedents of successful environmental campaigns that direct their initiative to children in primary school. By targeting children under 12 to become agents of change, the campaign is automatically being communicated to the their families and the surrounding communities of the schools, which is an effective way of educating multiple groups with varying socio-economic status.

SUBMARINE ACTIVITY ROOM

Aside from infographic panels, an activity room shaped like a submarine is decorated with illustrations that illustrate the ambience of an ocean floor. The chosen murals are a representation of the idealistic condition of the environment, not the realistic and distressed condition. This activity room is a safe and fun space that still offers optional educational material.

STICKER BOOK

The sticker activity booklet is designed as a buffer during the exhibition. As children easily tire from lengthy activities, the book provides a fun break that also recalls the information of the exhibition without being too intense. A large consideration in this activity book is the versatility with the age range of the audience. Lower primary school and upper primary school students have very different learning capabilities, which means the book needs to offers multiple activities with varying difficulties. The activities need to be engaging yet concise, each page should not take more than ten minutes. This book also serves to market the brand as each visitor gets to take home a copy.

Luthfia Ilmi Setyaningtyas

Luthfia (she/her) is a Brisbane-based visual designer with a passion for branding, concept development and digital illustration. Luthfia utilises these skills in combination with her love for 3D modelling, which gives her flexibility in creating designs for customized products. She is particularly fond of designs that involve storytelling for children, experimental spaces and persuasive campaign strategies.
